Jack Tatum “The Assassin” Oakland Raiders Safety Has Died
Jack Tatum, the Pro Bowl safety for the Oakland Raiders has died of a heart attack in an Oakland hospital, Tuesday. He was 61 years old. Jack Tatum is very known for his crushing hit that paralyzed Darryl Stingley in 1978 NFL preseason game. That was where he earned the nickname “The Assassin.”
According to his friend and former Ohio State teammate John Hicks, Jack Tatum had diabetes in the past several years, and had lost his left leg because of circulation problems.
In a preseason game versus the New England Patriots, Aug. 12, 1978, the hard-hitting Tatum slammed dance into Stingley with his helmet while the receiver was running a pass pattern. The blow severed Stingley’s fourth and fifth vertebrae and left the receiver paralyzed from the neck down.
